Daughter Born Without a Mother by Neil Ellman

(after the painting by Francis Picabia)

An orphaned child
born of an ancient wheel
iron in her veins
steel in her eyes
in naves and spokes
felloes and pins
like the man
who forged her
by his fire
and soon forgot—
a motherless child
she turns and spins
alone, a wheel
in an empty place
without a world
to call her own.
