And So I Go by Merridith Allen

And so I go.

Back in time
To the spaces between breaths
Where glowing eyes
Or were they fingers
Reached inside of me

Pulling sweet things
Nectar of sensuous fantasy
That shatters
When sunshine slides through slats
Of my window

I – who am

Alone
At the edge
Of some precipice
In some smoggy metropolis
Where
Through the clouds
I can’t see heaven
Let alone your face

Yet,
Still I go
Still I go
Back
And back
And back
And back
Reaching with open palms
For fleeting memories
Caught
Lost
Fraught
In a night’s web of spidery dreams

Is this love unseemly?
This transitory story
Believe me
I was –
Blindsided
Capsized
Unbridled
By the breach between you and I

If I had the time
To take back
If I had the rhyme or reason
To reach into our past
What would I –
Equipped with my truth and season
Do?

I would
Spin you round
Brush your lips with my tongue
Before tasting that
Nectar of sensuous fantasy
I would
Whisper
My words spelling the secret
Piece by piece

I love you.

And I would splinter
Into a thousand tiny mirrors
Reflecting your secret
For a moment
Flashing
Across
Those evergreen eyes

What would I see?
And what would I be?
After what you’d say to me?
Back
And back
And back
To that time?
I wonder.
But I
Will never know
Save for, in my dreams
Only, in my dreams.

And so I go.
