Ro Sham Bo by Shannon Austin

If the game were honest, I would think
rock and scissors would always lose
to paper, because even though

you hear of death by natural causes
and armed assailants wielding axes
and letter openers, death by paper

cuts into the brain, crippling
reputations while reporters dig up
something more fatal than bones.

Besides, though blood is thicker,
water sinks both scissors and rocks,
and while both corrode at the bottom

of some riverbed, the paper floats.
