Constellation According to the Laws of Chance by Neil Ellman

(after the wood painting by Jean Arp)

In a moment of indecision
as if by chance
he splattered the sky with stars
without a plan.
he of all creatures
invented by man
could not conceive
of crabs, rams and scorpions
so unlike himself
that he trusted to the laws of chance
and made a clutter
of the universe—
nor could he conceive of miracles
and so we muddled on
as if the future were ours to make.
